60's Spring Girls

I'm kind of obssessed with the 60's.

Just listen:

I don't know about you, but I find the falsetto is so very attractive.

Also:  Books/Movies about the 60's!

I read The Help a little before the movie came out, and I could see why someone would want to make a film out of it - Great storyline!  Unforgettable characters!  Awesome writing!  I also read The Secret Life of Bees (it's been made into a movie too), which pretty much takes place in the exact same time period as The Help did.  A reeeeally moving book about mothers and daughters.  Both deal with racial issues and tensions during the 60's.  I recommend for you guys to read these two books!
So here are some 60's inspired looks that I've compiled that are influenced by both the movies and the books..ENJOY!

SKEETER PHELAN

Skeeter of "The Help" Inspired
Blouse - Cotton On, Shorts - Mango, Sunglasses - Fred Flare, Black leather belt - Jane NormanTo Kill a Mockingbird - go to a bookstore!

Yay for the bookish Skeeter!  She's all about nude and earthy colors.  Don't forget your favorite novel and cute cat eye sunglasses as you roam about town!

MISS CELIA FOOTE
Celia Foote Inspired

Blouse - Modcloth, Romper - H&M, Heels - Zappos , Earrings - Debenhams, Lipstick - Armani Beauty

Who doesn't love the rambunctious Celia?  Even though she spends her time all alone in her huge mansion, her style never falters!  Loud colors, a fun romper, and killer heels help channel your inner Celia (and her muse Marilyn Monroe).

MAY BOATWRIGHT
May Boatwright Inspired
Printed top - Dorothy Perkins, Skirt - Ruche, Moustache watch - ASOS, Bumblebee Ring - Republic, Fox pin - Hannah Zakari, Plane pin - Hannah Zakari, Scarf - Tommy, Bow hairclip - American Apparel, Hair pins - Marc Jacobs, Shoes - Keds

No matter her age, May Boatwright is a child at heart.  Her wacky nature should only be reflected by her fashion sense, right!?  Quirky accessories (the fun pins are so cute!) and eclectic print mixing (as seen in the movie) are key to her inspiration.  Don't forget to wear braids too!

Odd Food Pairings

The wonderful thing about good food is how so many different tastes and textures leave the same feeling in your mouth: the feeling of satisfaction that you just ate something AMAZING.

This feeling is even more intensified when the you get the surprise of eating two foods that don't seem like they should go together, actually DO go together.  So here are some of my more flavorful experiences..And comment if you have your own pairing that you want to share with a fellow foodie! :)

1) Mac and Cheese + Salsa

This combo derived from the Sammy Keyes series.  So when I tried it for lunch one day during 5th grade, I was definitely pleased.  The sour/spicy/fresh salsa made a great counterbalance to the hearty and warm macaroni and cheese.

2) Spicy Hot Cheetos + Grapes

One day at a Girl Scouts meeting, we had Spicy Hot Cheetos for snacks.  I grabbed a bunch of the deliciously maroon-powdered morcels from the bowl.  As I munched, I realized my wimpiness had struck again; I could not tolerate the heat!  To relieve my stress of the spiciness, I reached for the plumpy purple grapes.  Not only did they do the job, they also added nice tangy sweetness and a juicy punch to the crunchy spicy Cheetos.  I ate, one or two Spicy Hot Cheetos, and then a single grape.  And then the process of alternating between the two began again.  AND SO, this delicious pairing was born.

3) Potato Chips + Burgers

Not as creative as the other pairings might be, this is probably the combo the least experimental foodie would lean to.  Insert the chips inside the burger, et voilĂ !  A perfect crunch to your otherwise texture-boring burger.

4) Lemons + Barbeque Sauce

Credits to my sis for discovering this pair at a restaurant at Yosemite when we were bored.  Sounds kind of disgusting..but when you actually eat it, it is a culinary match made in heaven!  The acidity of a sour, puckery lemon is lowered when you drizzle a sweet and smokey BBQ sauce!  It's SO yummy to suck on a wedge that's dipped in a tangy and savory sauce!

5) French Fries + Milkshakes

Swirl your savory, chewy/crunchy (whichever you prefer) french fries into a creamy milkshake.  Bring the treat to your mouth.  Chew.  Swallow.  You have just gone through a spiritual awakening.

Feast Your Eyes #1: Enchanted by Miyazaki

(Edit:  I decided to make this a weekly feature, where I post pics that relate to a theme that I have fancied for a while..I think this is called a picture roll?  Or something like that?  Yeah.)

Alright, so I wrote an article that I want to submit to Rookie, and I got sososo obsessed with the subject of the article during the process of writing it, I wanted to explore it a bit more on this blog.

So what did I write about?  The great Hayao Miyazaki!  If you haven't watched one of his movies, I urge you to start watching NOW!  While I wait for a reply from my submission, I'll post a few noteworthy shots from Miyazaki movies..It just so happens that quite a few of them have a springtime vibe!  Perfect!

PS:  If Rookie doesn't feature it, I'll just put it up here. Hah.

PPS:  I'll do a fashion post on the Miyazaki girls in the future...Perhaps if my article gets through Rookie?  Because that'll just be so COOL! C:

Can't We Just Fall Back?

Where I'm living, the weather is seriously on its period.  Last week, it was hot hot HOT.  This week, it's been raining nonstop.  What is a wannabe fashionista to dooo??

The sky sending my area mixed signals + My favorite fashion season is fall  -> I fall back on autumn vibes.

I'm praying that the weather warms up and stops raining so I can wear some new purchases I got from Forever 21!

Paprazzi Shades - Urban Outfitters, High/Low Top - Urban Outfitters, Camisole - Aeropostale, Colored Skinny Jeans - Forever 21, Necklace - American Eagle

This is my "Colorful Rocker" look.  Simple top in a smoky gray (I love gray!) and fun, colorful jeans are the basics of this outfit (matching necklace is optional and was purely coincidental in my case).  Doc Martens would complete this look  (IF I HAD ANY ;-; ).

Colored Polo - Aeropostale, Yellow Sweater - Forever 21, Puffy Vest - Gap, Patterned Jeans - Forever 21

Kay, so this outfit ("The Active Nerd") is more appropriate for the chillier days.  I put a sporty twist on the preppy look by adding a dark puffy vest, but the spring time colors are still present as seen in the chipper yellow and hot pink polo underneath.  Unfortunately, you can't see the floral pattern on the pants (the quality weirded out in this pic?), but I assure you it's there..Maybe I'll post another pic that showcases it better?

Colored Polo (see above), Pleated Skirt - Forever 21, Headband - Accessorize

"The Tennis Clubber" reminds me of a varsity tennis player at a private school.  The bright polo brings funkiness to the outfit while the skirt adds a timeless twist.  If I had one, I would totally be sporting a sweatband on my wrist.  For shoes, I would go with oxfords to complete this preppy look (I feel like a flat would be too fancy and a sneaker too sporty; oxfords are the happy medium).

Colored Polo (see above), Yale Hooded Sweatshirt - Yale, Pleated Skirt (see above), Headband - American Eagle

If you can't tell already, I love reusing pieces!  This isn't really a completely different outfit on its own, but I want to show how to work sweats for all the lazy bums like me (I hope to do more lazy girl-tailored outfits in the future!).
I would probably call this "Toasty and Tired" - imagine "The Tennis Clubber" after practice, when it's cold and all you want to do is curl up in your warm collegiate sweatshirt..Or maybe it's frosty in the morning (in which case I would recommend tights and also the puffy vest from the second outfit) and when you look inside your closet, all you see is a heap of cozy bundles that don't necessarily scream "HEYLOOKI'MFASHIONFORWARD".
I also kept in the pink polo from the last two outfits to add a pop of color.  So essentially:  Pair sweatshirts with feminine pieces so you don't look like me on Mondays.  Accessorize a lot too, so that you exude a fresher, less tired, attitude.

Alrighty, I hope you enjoyed my first fashion post!  I hope there's going to be plenty more to come (hopefully more springy)! :)

Reflections of Freshmen Year #1: 4x100

So Freshman year, I decided to try out track and field.  You know, jazz things up a little.  I've always liked the idea of speeding towards the finish line, and I always beat my mom and my athletic sister at sprinting.  Obviously, I was a natural track star.

No way could I run like fifty miles a day without wimping out and/or barfing, so distance running is out.  I've always liked sprinting, because:
1) It's short
2) It's over in like 15 seconds
3) It has minimal workouts for practices
4) I still get to be lazy

So at our very first meet, I caught the attention of our coach because of my kick arse time (told you I was a natural!).  Consequently, I got to run the frosh-soph 4x100 relay.  That is, the non-varsity four person team, where each person runs 100 meters (400 meters is one lap).

I am leg #2.

So in the 4x100, the hand-offs are key.  Hand-offs is when you give the baton to the other person.

The batons always match the uniforms!  Cute, right?!

The person who hands off to the next person has to yell "STICK" (one time, the male 4x100 team decided to use a term that relates to a male bodypart instead of "Stick"..I'll leave that to your imagination), so the other person knows that he/she can stick out his/her arm to receive the baton.

All of this is supposed to be done without the receiver person not looking back.

So anyway, back to the story.  The girls' frosh soph team already ran in one meet, so we were fairly confident in our skills for the second meet, which thankfully was a scrimmage.

The frosh soph girls' 4x100 is the VERY first meet of the event.  So after warming up, we got to our positions in the track and awaited the gunshot.

Everything looked fine; so when Gertrude* started to get close to me, I remained cool.

But then, it happened.

Gertrude stepped on the back of my track shoe.

Even after realizing this, I was determined to keep going.  So I continued to run without a shoe on one of my feet.

On the inside, I freaked out. I must have looked so stupid, running without a shoe.

Pushing forward, I neared Girl #3.  I think by then,I was a teary, snotty, pathetic, and embarrassed mess.

I had to keep going though.  I told myself that I needed to redeem myself.  I told myself we still could pull this off.  I told myself we still had a chance.

Naturally, I dropped the baton.

But folks, there's a lesson to be learned here:  You'll never do worse than I did that day in the 4x100.

*Name has been changed.
